HORATIO GATES
(1728 - 1806) American Revolution Major General who with Arnold forced Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, he was later examined by Congress for his disastrous defeat at Camden. Very rare war-date A.D.S. with good association, 2p., folio, "given at Head Quarters in Providence," May 12, 1779, an abstract of pay due Colonel John Topham's regimental officers for January 1779. In part: "Sir, pay Mr. Gabriel Allen Pay Master to Col John Topham's Regiment the sum of Four Thousand six hundred and eighty two Dollars... agreeable to the within Abstract for Pay and Subsistence... And for so doing this shall be your sufficient Warrant...". Boldly signed, "Horatio Gates, Major General", and countersigned by GABRIEL ALLEN. Verso bears a list of the regiment's staff and field officers with an enumerated list of their pay. Verso contains signatures of JOHN TOPHAM, GABRIEL ALLEN, EZEKIEL CORNELL, and BENJAMIN STELLE. Toned with some light staining and foxing, else an fine and rare war-date Gates document.
