Description:

Arnold forced Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, he was later examined by Congress for his disastrous defeat at Camden. Outstanding 1776 war-date D.S. "Horatio Gates M[ajor]. G[eneral]..", 1p. sm. oblong 4to., Fort Ticonderoga, Oct. 30, 1776, an official Colony of Massachusetts Bay appointment of William McKendry as: "...Adjutant of a Regiment rais'd for the Service of the United States...You are therefore to carefully & diligently to discharge the duty of an adjutant in Leading, Ordering & Exercising said Regiment in Arms both inferior Officers & Soldiers; and to keep them in good Order & Discipline...". With small wax seal at upper-left, slight toning, overall very good. This is the first such war-dated appointme18711nt we have seen.
