Horace Maynard 1814-1882 Postmaster General in the administration of Rutherford B. Hayes. Fine content war-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Cincinnati, Nov. 4, 1861 to Union Gen. William T. Sherman. Maynard advises he has spoken with Gen. Michell concerning Union regiments and artillery. In part: ...why in the name of all that my poor people hold dear cannot [they] be ordered forward? Your simple assent is all that is needed... I surely must have misunderstood... when you told me that there were no troops at your disposal. Sherman was in a dark period of his career, fearing being overrun just before his alleged nervous breakdown .
