Description:

HORACE GREELEY(1811 - 1872) American journalist and founder of the New York Tribune which advocated abolition, and universal amnesty and suffrage. Greeley also posted bail for Jefferson Davis. Good content A.L.S. as Congressman from New York, 1p. 4to., Washington, Dec. 23, 1848. In part: "...I enclose you a table which...will show the aggregate vote of each district in your state for each of its candidates for Congress. Will you please fill it up and return it to me...I hope our friends have not given away the Legislature...We are having a small fight with Slavery here. We have beaten once on the district slave trade but are likely to lose it by reconsideration...". Very good. It's no secret that Greeley was an ardent abolitionist and did everything in his power to end slavery in the southern states.
