(1811 - 1872) American journalist and founder of the New York Tribune which advocated abolition, and universal amnesty and suffrage. Greeley also posted bail for Jefferson Davis. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., New York, July 8, 1860 to E. B. Holdin. Greeley expresses his regret that he will be unable to deliver an address at his correspondent's function as he has already committed to another event: "...at much inconvenience to myself...in order to secure a general attendance of Republicans of that county...". At the time, Greeley was doing his best to thwart the presidential aspirations of his foe, William Seward. Fine, matted and framed with an engraving.
