JOSEPH HOOKER (1814 - 1879) Union major general who commanded the Army of the Potomac only to be defeated at the hands of Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville. War-date A.L.S. as Major General on official letterhead, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Feb. 21, 1863 to Adj. Gen. Lorenzo Thomas in Washington, in part: "...As General Buford's presence is urgently required with the Reserve Cavalry Brigade to the command of which he has been assigned, I respectfully request that he may be relieved from further service in Washington and ordered to join here at once... ". A light marginal stain at top, else very good. In an early frame. Under Hooker, Buford would bravely lead the regiment at Chancellorsville. $600-800
