Description:

HOLOCAUST-DERIVED BOOK OF HUMAN ANATOMY
Especially rare medical reference book: 'Atlas of Topographical and Applied Human Anatomy, Volume One, Head and Neck' by Edward Pernkopf (Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders Company), first American edition, 1963. 356pp. 11.25 x 8.5 in. in green boards with partial leather, gold titles on cover and spine. Spine edges heavily worn, edges of covers less so, contents very fine. Eduard Pernkopf (1888-1955) was an Austrian professor of anatomy who later served as rector of the University of Vienna. He is best known for this atlas, prepared by Pernkopf and four artists over a 20-year period. While it is considered a scientific and artistic masterpiece, with many of its color plates reprinted in other publications and textbooks, it has been in recent years found that Pernkopf and the artists working for him, all of them ardent Nazis, used executed political prisoners, Jews and other victims of the Nazi-regime as their subjects. Dr Sabine Hildebrandt, from Harvard Medical School, says at least half of the 800 images in the atlas came from political prisoners. They included gay men and lesbians, gypsies, political dissidents and Jews. 'There can be no doubt that Pernkopf, as head of the Anatomy Institute, was instrumental in the procurement of the bodies of the victims of Nazi terror for dissection, and ultimately, for the creation of his Atlas,' argues Pieter Carstens, a professor of public law at the University of Pretoria. 'In this sense he was an indirect perpetrator in the execution of the victims, but a direct perpetrator in the subsequent processing and pillaging of the bodies.'
