Description:

(HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS)
Outstanding lot consisting of thirteen 8" x 10" motion picture publicity stills including many rare and extremely scarce 1920's - 1930's studio and candid images. Includes: W. C. Fields (2), Orson Welles, three images including a fantastic 1939 RKO portrait and an exceptional 3/4 shot standing in front of a CBS microphone holding his trademark pipe and a radio script; Will Rogers, two images including a rare 1927 newsreel photo of Rogers and pilot Al De Garma soon after Rogers became the first commercial air traveler to fly from coast and back again. "I feel like a Lindbergh air mail stamp", the comedian was heard to quip. John Barrymore, two images including an excellent and near pristine 1936 posed portrait by famed M.G.M. photographer Ted Allen (with back stamp on verso), in character as Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet" and a scarce continuity layout portrait supplied by Rotophoto, 1939. Jackie Cooper, two images including a very scarce 1931 "Our Gang" publicity shot, evidently provided by Hal Roach when he consented to allow Cooper to work at other studios and...a terrific group photo of Cooper hosting a little party given for Judy Garland and her friends: Mickey Rooney and Edna May Durbin. All are pictured sitting at a table eating ice cream and laughing. Also, two photographs of Charlie Chaplin reprinted from the original negatives in 1953, including the famous image of Chaplain sitting in an alleyway with child actor Jackie Coogan and a still from "The Great Dictator". All images are in very good to fine condition except the De Garma photo of Will Rogers which has two minor tears at the corners.
