Description:

HJALMAR SCHACHT
(1877 - 1970) German financier and banker who engineered the rearmament of Germany, but later broke with Hitler and joined the resistance when Germany went to war. T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. large 4to., Berlin, Dec. 29, 1937, to GEORGE SYLVESTER VIERECK (1884-1962), American poet, propagandist and Germanophile; an early supporter of Hitler and general apologist for Nazism, convicted in 1942 for failing to register as a Nazi agent. In part: ‘…I would like to thank you for sending me your new book ‘The Kaiser on Trial'. I have only now found the time to read it, but I have now read it with great interest. The idea of having the actors of the great World War theater appear before the tribunal of history will immediately captivate the reader of your work, so that you need not worry about the success of the book. The time that has passed since the collapse of 1918 has proven to be the Kaiser's best ally, because recently we have occasionally encountered more sensible opinions about him abroad. So it may be that your book is appearing at the right time and thus giving a new impetus to the development that is underway…' ‘The Kaiser on Trial' was about a hypothetical trial of Wilhelm II in the aftermath of World War I and the Treaty of Versailles, focusing on the Kaiser's early life and his involvement in the war. Some folds and stains, otherwise very good.
