Description:

HJALMAR SCHACHT
(1877 - 1970) German financier and banker who engineered the rearmament of Germany. Broke with Hitler and joined the resistance when Germany went to war. Acquitted at Nuremberg. Excellent typed Ms.S. in English, 18pp. 4to., [n.p.], April 10, 1970, an extraordinarily detailed narrative of Schacht's trial at Nuremburg, written from his own perspective and extensively quoting his given testimony. In very small part: "... Dr. [Rudolph] Dix [Schacht's lawyer] passed to the Jewish question. The indictment contained no charge against me on this count, but it did include the charge of Nazi ideology, and my lawyer rightly inferred that 'the practice of the strongest anti-Semitism was inextricably bound up with this ideology.' The result was exactly what we expected. The American prosecutor, [Robert H.] Jackson, sprang to his feet and interrupted the proceeding, exclaiming: 'We concede that Dr. Schacht did give aid and support to individual Jews. But we maintain that he held the view that German Jews should be deprived of their rights as citizens, and we also maintain that Dr. Schacht supported and took part in the persecution of German Jews.' Dr. Dix immediately raised the question whether I was likewise charged with war crimes on land and sea, and demonstrated from the indictment that this was indeed the case. Jackson became very excited. The President intervened. My war crimes on land and sea were temporarily shelved and we returned to the Jewish question... 'I went to Hitler and told him: "Mr. James Speyer, one of the most respected of New York bankers and a great benefactor of his former country, is coming to see me and I intend to give a banquet in his honor. I take it that you have no objection." Whereupon he replied, in very decided and striking fashion: "Herr Schacht, you may do anything you like." From this I gathered that he gave me full liberty to associate with my Jewish friends as hitherto, which I did...' I found it almost painful to have to recount all that I had done for the Jews – painful because to champion such persecuted people is, at bottom, no more than the duty of any decent man..." Much more highly detailed, if self-serving content besides. Schacht signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding the date. Shows folds, else very good to fine.
