Description:

HITLER PHOTO BOOK FROM A 'GERMANIZATION' CAMP
Quite a rare and unusual relic, a Heinrich Hoffman photo book honoring Adolf Hitler, inscribed by an ethnic German attending a 'Germanization' camp to prepare for resettlement in German-occupied lands in the east. The book is 'Hitler in Real Life' (Berlin: Zeitgeschichte -Verlag), 1937. 94pp. 4to., with chipped photo dust wrapper. The photos, compiled by Hoffmann, purportedly show Hitler in his everyday life, from meeting with generals and top administrators to greeting small children and his adoring public, thus humanizing the dictator. The title page bears an unsigned holograph inscription: 'In remembrance of Camp 22, Hindenburg' and beneath appears an ink stamp with swastika: 'Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle Lager 22 Silesia' Very good. The Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle was tasked with implementing the ethnic policy goals of National Socialism with regard to 'ethnic Germans' living outside the German Reich. Under the slogan 'Home to the Reich', the agency primarily organized the transport and accommodation of the 'ethnic Germans' during their resettlement from foreign territories to the occupied border areas in the east. In June 1941, the agency became an SS main office that was directly subordinate to Himmler. Many of the ethnic settlers were provided clothing and goods stolen from Holocaust victims.
