Description:

HIRSCHFANGER HUNTING DAGGER
Fine single-edged German "Hirschfanger", or hunting sword, 24 1/2" blade, 30" overall, made approx. 1780. The grip is of taupe rayskin, with a vertical band of brass decorated with a shell motif. The crossguard, blade guard, pommel, and D-shaped handguard are all of brass with a similar motif. The blade is etched on the right side with an image of a hound chasing a boar in a wooded scene within a geometric border, with a second hound outside, and on the left side with a similar image, replacing the boar with a stag. The weapon is housed in a black leather scabbard with brass fittings, with a compartment for a dining set, consisting of a two-tined fork and a knife marked "G. Muller", each approx. 7", and both with brass handles continuing the scrolled shell motif. The blade bears some oxidation, with minor pitting near the tip, and some cracking to the leather scabbard, else very good.
