Description:

HIRSCHFANGER HUNTING DAGGER
Elaborate German "Hirschfanger", or hunting sword, made circa 1760. The fine Rococo-style hilt is fire-gilt brass, and features numerous figures and designs in high relief, including a bounding stag and several hounds, one attacking a lion. The pommel is formed in the shape of a couchant lion, while the hand guard features the full-length figure of a hunter with his rifle in eighteenth-century garb, with a hound at his feet. A seated dog near the base of the guard appears to be barking at the couchant lion pommel. The large, complex blade guard bears the image of several hounds attacking a bounding doe and stag. The blade is engraved on the right side with the Latin motto: "Omnia Sipertas famam servare memento" ("If you lose everything, remember that there is still honor"), beneath an image of a bounding lynx. The opposite side bears the motto: "Quidquid agis Prodenter agas Et respice finem" ("Whatever you do, do it wisely and consider the end"), beneath the image of a bounding hound. The weapon is housed in a black leather scabbard with fire-gilt brass furniture bearing Rococo military motifs, including cannon, a bow, and flags. Some mild tarnish to the blade, with minor cracking to the leather scabbard, else very good.
