Description:

(HIROSHIMA) SHINZO HAMAI
(1905 – 1968) The first popularly elected Mayor of Hiroshima (served 1947-1955 and again 1959-1967) who created Hiroshima's image as a city of peace and built Peace Park. The circumstances of his rise to prominence result from the fact that following the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, many municipal employees were killed or incapacitated, while Hamai was only slightly injured. At the time of the explosion, he was at his house located about 3.5 km from the epicenter. Scarce T.L.S. as mayor on official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Hiroshima, Oct. 25, 1948 to a 'Mr. Crouch' acknowledging his letter, adding: '...I am sorry to be taxing your patience for so long. Please be assured that I shall send the articles requested just as soon as regulations permit...' Folds, fine condition.
