Description:

HIROSHIMA: REBUILDING THE CITY AFTER THE BOMB
A fascinating World War II journal, a bound volume entitled ‘The Rebirth of a City: A Photographic Essay Prepared by The Hiroshima Educational Section' by Theodore W. Faulkner, July 20, 1948, containing within 18 original b/w photographs showing the devastation of the city, with each photograph meticulously described in a typed. The book measures 7 x 9.5 in., bound in green linen, and the photographs are 6.25 x 4.75 in. and neatly mounted in tabs. The page of each photo bears a note in Kanji affixed beneath it. The heart-wrenching images vividly display the wreckage of the city, and more particularly, the toll the bombing took on the educational system: students are shown in severely overcrowded classrooms of ruined buildings and classes held outside due to lack of schools, with each photograph documenting the school, the number of students, the site which it replaced, classes held in unused factory buildings, and other information designed to highlight the plight of the city not just in terms of damage to structures, but the damage sustained to the Japanese education system which holds, to this day, central importance to the culture. Signed by the author on a paper label on the cover. Cover exhibits wear, while interior pages are toned and somewhat fragile. Photographs, however are in fine condition. A rarity indeed!
