Description:

HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI A.A.F. MAPS (2)
An important lot comprised of two maps belonging to LOUISE HEILBRUNN, an employee of the Army Map Service during World War II, depicting the Hiroshima and Nagasaki prefectures, 39.5 x 37 in. and 32 x 33 in. respectively, both showing roads, railroads, shrines, temples, hospitals, rice fields cemeteries, wooded areas, etc. in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Hiroshima map is marked as ‘EMERGENCY PROVISIONAL EDITION' at the bottom left and top right margins, with a notation at the bottom center, reading: ‘Officers using this chart will mark hereon corrections and additions which come to their attention and mail direct to ‘Headquarters Aeronautical Chart Service, Army Air Forces, Washington, D.C.'. The bottom right reveals this map was produced by the Army Map Service, and is dated August, 1945, numbered ‘340460'. The Nagasaki map bears the title ‘PRELIMINARY UNCORRECTED EDITION' at the bottom left and top right margins. Notated at the bottom center ‘For Use With AAF Air Objective Folder Sasebo 90, 36', further marked with the same notation from the Hiroshima map. Once again, the bottom indicates the production of this map to be through the Army Map Service, and is dated February, 1944, numbered ‘340961'. Each map is twice-marked ‘RESTRICTED', is mounted and bears a very light varnish protective finish which displays some light chipping. During Heilbrunn's lifetime she had both maps framed, leaving us with a strong inclination that she personally had a hand in the Army's drafting of these maps. SOLD WITH: a large collection of Heilbrunn's personal documents and photos from before, during, and after the war. Includes: her Army Map Service pinback ID badge with her name and photo; Heer ribbon bar with Nazi pin attached; small SA sports badge; 1943 letters to Heilbrunn discussing her new role with the Army Map Service and the importance of keeping learned information safe; leave of absence requests; a 1942 Red Cross letter accepting her into a volunteer nursing course; newspaper clippings on Heilbrunn and other women joining the War Department; photos depicting Heilbrunn and family and friends; ledger book; personal bible; school documents; Red Cross nurse's aide manual; pilot's log with only one entry as a student; postwar diary, etc. A fine lot comprised of two very rare wartime maps, and a collection of ephemera worthy of more research.
