Description:

HIROSHI OSHIMA
(1886 - 1975) General in the Japanese Army and Japanese ambassador to Nazi Germany during World War II. Virtually all of his diplomatic dispatches were intercepted by the Allies. Sentenced for war crimes at Tokyo and imprisoned until 1955. Fine content war-date T.L.S. on Japanese Embassy letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Oct. 28, 1939 to Baron Carl Eduard von Coburg (1884-1954). Von Coburg, the last sovereign duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was a member of the SA and served as Nazi member of the Reichstag. He was president of the German Red Cross from December 1933 to 1945 and was aware of the German death camps. Oshima advises von Coburg of his removal as ambassador, writing in part: '...I hereby humbly announce that tomorrow, October 29, I will be leaving Berlin to return to Japan. To my keenest regret, in the rush to prepare for my journey, I was no longer able to pay my respects to Your Royal Highness in order to present my farewell greetings in person; I therefore feel compelled to say goodbye in writing and to convey to Your Royal Highness, in addition to my heartfelt thanks for every favor bestowed on me, my heartfelt wishes for health, happiness and well-being...' Folds, else fine condition. On August 25, 1939, the German government decided to conclude the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and to suspend negotiations on a Japan-German alliance and defense agreement. This caused great turmoil in the Japanese government, contributing to the collapse of the Hiranuma Cabinet. Oshima was recalled to Japan to take responsibility in September 1939, and was dismissed as an ambassador on December 27. At German insistence, he was returned to Berlin as ambassador in February the following year.
