Description:

HIROO ONODA
(1922 - 2014) Imperial Japanese officer who served in World War II, and a Japanese holdout who did not surrender until 1974, the second to last Japanese soldier to capitulate. Great pair of S.P.s, 5.5 x 4 in. b/w, a chest-up portraits of Onoda in uniform, one taken during the war and the other after his surrender, each signed across the image. Very fine. Onoda was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines in December of 1944 with orders to hamper enemy activities and not to surrender under any circumstances. Allied forces landed on the island on February 28, 1945, and all Japanese forces present quickly surrendered except for Onoda and three others who took to the hills. On many occasions leaflets were dropped near their location announcing the war's end and urging them to turn themselves in, but they were all dismissed as lies and Allied propaganda. One by one over a series on engagements with local police and farmers, the three men accompanying Onoda were killed. When the Japanese government learned about him through a citizen that tracked Onoda down, they sent his wartime commanding officer to relieve him, and he finally surrendered on March 9, 1974.
