Description:

HIRAM PAULDING
(1797-1878) Union rear admiral who directed the salvage of ships at the Gosport Navy Yard after the evacuation of Confederate forces. Fine content war-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Navy Yard, New York, Aug. 19, 1863, likely to William Cullen Bryant, the editor of the New York Evening Post. In part: "…I was informed by an officer of the Navy that a Mr. Alexander Goodwin, now employed in the Adjutant Generals Office, at Albany, called upon his family…his wife being a relative [of mine]. That Mr. Goodwin after enquiring after another relative observed "of course she is Secession." The reply being in the negative Mr. G. remarked "then I will not call upon her." I convey the information in the hope that the ''Evening Post'' will expose the fact , that Governor Seymour of New York has on the Adjutant Generals office…an acknowledged Secessionist & therefore a man hostile to the government of the United States - a traitor & a Rebel in a place of public confidence where he may betray the best interests of the country. If any further information is desired I will make enquiry of my friend..." Second page mounted, bottom trimmed, else fine.
