Description:

HIRAM G. BERRY AND GEORGE STONEMAN
HIRAM G. BERRY (1824-1863) Union general who served at 1st Bull Run, Fair Oaks and the Seven Days, killed while leading a bayonet charge at Chancellorsville. War-date A.E.S. on the verso of a manuscript letter, 1p. 4to., ‘Camp Near Warranton Va', Nov. 15, 1862, in which Lt. Col. James G. Shaw tenders his resignation on the grounds of illness. On verso, Berry offers his endorsement of Shaw's discharge. GEORGE STONEMAN (1822 - 1894) Union major general who led a corps at Fredericksburg, and later commanded cavalry raids at Chancellorsville, Macon, and in the Carolinas, too, approves the request. However, an additional D.S. reports on the court martial of Shaw for dereliction of duty, and another letter dated November 17, 1862, indicates that Shaw was ‘a complete drunkard'! No doubt Berry and Stoneman were glad to see him go….Very good condition, three pieces.
