Description:

HINTON R. HELPER
(1829 - 1909), American writer; published "The Impending Crisis of the South, and How to Meet It" (1857), attacking slaveholding on economic grounds. A.L.S. "H. R. Helper" as U.S. Consul at Buenos Aires, Argentina, 4pp, March 4, 1865, 8vo, to Edward M. Davis , in Philadelphia, excellent content. Reads in part: "…How do you feel after four years of war with the slaveholders?... if I mistake not, you have always, since your very first years of discretion, practiced the virtue of antagonism to the fiendish fraternity of Kidnappers and Slaveholders. But I have more particular reference to the four years of actual, hard, material way which, in defense of our own integrity, we have been constrained to wage with energy against the accursed enemies of the human race. Most of the results of the war thus far are well known, even here in far off Buenos Ayres…but of the future, we are of course, more or less like yourself, left to conjecture…We who are friendly toward the Government of the United States, believing that it has merited the confidence and support of all good men, of whatever name or nation, have not, as yet, been able to see but one solution to the problem, and that is the complete establishment of the Union over the irresponsible downfall of Slavery and the Slaveholders. May the God of all grace keep our eyes from beholding any other solution…I believe that you have no purpose nor policy in subordination to principle…Write me, frankly and freely and let me know…how and when the war will end…".Edward M. Davis (1811-87) was an American merchant, and was deeply interested in the anti-Slavery movement. During the Civil he served on the staff of General John C. Fremont.
