Description:

HINDENBURG ARTIFACTS
Group of five artifacts and ephemeral items from the German airship Hindenburg, which burned at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station on May 6, 1937. Includes: collapsible travel razor in a metal case, 2" x 1 1/4" x 3/4", heavily charred in the conflagration; a box of replacement razor blades in a metal case, 2" x 1" x 1/4", heavily charred, includes remnants of paper dividers; a Bakelite die, heavily fire damaged, chipped and broken; and a length of Manila rope, 27" long, with scorch marks along its length. These artifacts are believed to have been recovered by Federick J. "Bull"Tobin, one of the boatswains in charge of the zeppelin's mooring lines. Also present is a postcard photo, depicting Hindenburg's main dining room, post-marked on the verso as mailed from the airship during a 1936 trans-Atlantic crossing: "A remarkable crossing. Very spacious public rooms & staterooms. Two floors of passenger accommodations. Perfect weather, no vibration & steady as a rock. Now flying about 1000 ft above the water. Go over Ireland tonight. Regards." Also present is an unused gummed luggage label, depicting an airship with swastika flags on her rudders, flying over a sailing ship on the ocean. The text reads, in German: "Im Zeppelin Uber den Ozean/ DeutscheZeppelin-Reederei" ("In a Zeppelin Over the Ocean/ German Zeppelin Shipping Company"), with space to list the passenger's name, destination, departure, and berth number. Fine.
