Description:

HIMMLER ORDERS VIENNA'S CATHOLIC BISHOP BE PROTECTED DURING ANTI-CATHOLIC RIOTING
Notarized official and contemporary copy of an order sent to ERNST KALTENBRUNNER (1903-1946), SS-Obergruppenfuhrer who headed the RSHA (Gestapo and Kripo) and SD, by HEINRICH HIMMLER, 1p. 4to., Gestapo headquarters, Saarbrucken, [n.d., ca. 1938]. Fine content concerning Catholic protests against the Nazis and protection for Cardinal Theodor Innitzer. In part: "...[Message] No. 19 836...Further investigations of participants in the demonstrations is unimportant and must be avoided...2 Stapo office for the Cardinal's personal protections remain in place...You have to ensure that Innitzer does not receive a scratch. A martyrdom of this gentleman is undesirable...All orders for the behavior of police...you will receive from Gauleiter Burckel...". Copies of this message are also shown as being forwarded to Martin Bormann, Gen. Bodenschatz, and other upper police leaders. The document bears Himmler's Reichsfuhrer-SS stamp at bottom and is signed and notarized by SS attorney Viktor Sauer (b. 1880) at bottom. File holes, else fine. Cardinal Theodor Innitzer (1875-1955) and his fellow Catholics faced repressive measures under the Nazis, to the point where Innitzer's offices and residence were ransacked and protesters were beaten in the streets.
