Description:

A rare grouping of endorsements of Union officers and generals who distinguished themselves at Gettysburg, penned on the wrapper of a document which once contained the Apr. 24, 1865 letter of resignation of the Chaplain of the 20th Maine, Alfred C. Godfrey. The endorsements, as they appear on the document, include: WALTER G. MORRILL (1841-1935) Lt. Col. of the 20th Me. (promoted to Captain July 1, 1863), who writes: "It is my belief that this officer could do no good with the Regt. and I earnestly recommend that his resignation be accepted. Walter G. Morrill Lieut Col. Comdg 20th Maine Vols"; an E.S. by JOSEPH C. EDMANDS (1842-1879) Bvt. Brig. Gen. and Colonel of the 32nd Mass. Inf'y, wounded at Gettysburg, again at Petersburg and Poplar Springs, a POW at Sangster's Sta. and a Medal of Honor recipient, signed endorsement forwards the request; JOSHUA L. CHAMBERLAIN (1828-1914) Union brigadier general of the 20th Maine who turned back the Confederate assault on Little Round Top, signed endorsement forwards the request approved; CHARLES GRIFFIN (1825-1867) Major General who fought from Bull Run to Appomattox, leading a division at Gettysburg, signed endorsement forwards the request; and GEORGE G. MEADE (1815 - 1872) Union major general who commanded brilliantly at Gettysburg, leading to a Union victory and the turning point of the Civil War, who finally send the chaplain's request to the Adjutant General. A terrific association, lightly soiled and overall very good.
