Description:

HERMANN GORING
(1893 - 1946) German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. GORING SEEKS OPIOIDS WHILE UNDER ADDICTION TREATMENT IN 1925 Superb content, early A.L.S. on his personal letterhead with his family crest, 1p. 4to., Stockholm, June 12, 1925 to 'Fraulein Wuren[?] at 13 Blumenstrasse, Munich, likely a well connected lady and close associate or friend of Adolf Hitler. In part: 'Dear Fraulein, About 10 days ago I sent a very important [?], which contained a letter for Hitler, to Pentzkofer. I asked P. to hand over this letter immediately to Hitler personally and to give me immediately a message about it. Unfortunately I did not hear anything until today. I am in great care now. If P. did not receive my letter and was by Hitler is P. no longer there, but at a home in the country or what is the matter with him? I would thank you kindly if you would beg P. to give an information to me at once, if he handed over the letter to Hitler. If P. Is no longer dwelling with you, please tell me his new address. I thank you previously and am with best regards of my wife and myself...' With holograph envelope. Damp stained, a closed tear in blank upper-right margin, still very good. This letter follows on the heels of a May 11, 1925 letter to the same recipient asking if she would contact 'Pentzkofer' in order to obtain for Goring a quantity of 'Eukodal', a very powerful opioid. Hermann Goring developed a morphine addiction after suffering a severe hip injury and gunshot wound during World War I and the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, respectively. He was prescribed morphine to relieve the pain, leading to addiction. The Eukodal so urgently sought by Goring was a brand name for oxycodone, a synthetic opioid painkiller created in Germany in the early 20th century, similar to but stronger than morphine. Like other opioids, Eukodal had a high potential for addiction. By the spring of 1925, when this letter was written, Goring had become a violent morphine addict, beating a nurse who had refused him his drug of choice. Carin Goring's family was shocked, and they, with Carin, placed Goring in three hospitals, the last one Langbro Asylum on Sep. 1, 1925 where for a time he was secured in a strait jacket until he became 'clean'. The dates of his earlier hospitalizations are unclear, but it is clear from the content of this letter that he was under treatment...and still searching for the opioids we would not overcome until after his stay at Langbro Asylum.
