Description:

(1893 - 1946) German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. HERMANN GORING ANNOUNCES THE START OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE TO HIS GENERALS, URGING THEM TO EXERT ALL EFFORTS TO SUCCEED Superb content D.S. "Goring" in pencil, 1p. 4to., [n.p., likely Berlin], Dec. 16, 1944, the signed text of a "Secret" radio message to be sent to the Supreme Commander of Luftflotte 1, 4, 6, the Luftwaffe Chief of Staff, and the Luftwaffe commanding generals of Norway, Italy and Denmark. Goring announces the commencement of the Battle of the Bulge and urges every effort be made to support the desperate attack. In part: "German troops started to attack to the west today, 16.12.44 at 5.30 hours. The completion of the intended attack requires the focused concentration of all weapons...I expect that the commanding generals of the East, South and Northern fronts will make the best use of their powers and know how to master every situation with every means at their disposal. I am fully aware of the difficult situation..." File holes at left, else very good. Between December 16, 1944, and January 6, 1945, the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces claimed more than 400 German fighters shot down, while the RAF downed hundreds more. As U.S. ground forces blunted the German offensive five miles short of the Meuse River, where British troops covered the crossings, the Luftwaffe ceased to exist as a threat in the Bulge.
