Description:

HERMANN GORING'S PERSONAL FOLDING HUNTING CHAIR
A unique Goring relic, his custom personal folding hunting seat widely used by him in his many outings at his hunting lodge at Reichsjegerhof Rominten, and almost certainly on expeditions elsewhere. This single-legged stool measures 26 in. tall overall. The seat itself bears a hand-carved wood frame with six holes, obviously made to reduce carrying weight, with a carrying handle. The seat bears an ornate wicker weave which remains totally intact. Beneath the seat are aluminum fittings with a level allowing the seat to be folded flat against the shaft to facilitate its being easily carried. The bracket supporting the seat is engraved with simple lettering, Goring's initials 'H.G.' filled in black. The 24 in. support shaft terminates in another aluminum fitting, a spike which would be driven into the ground, and a circular stop to prevent the spike from sinking too deep. Typical wear, but no damage and entirely intact and operable in every respect. This item is consigned by a 95-year-old Dutch woman. In her letter of provenance to us (included), she states that the hunting stool was given to her husband when the couple lived in the Netherlands. She further notes: '...It had been found by another friend on her property in one of Goering's railroad cars that was parked somewhere on her property, after the Americans captured Goering...' She further writes that she had been told that the seat was partly constructed from a Messerschmitt part and specially constructed to 'hold his huge body', though we cannot confirm this. There is also a letter from her deceased husband on his personal letterhead, Winterswijk, Netherlands, July 16, 1970, who mentions a statement by Freifrau (Baroness) Eddy Wittenhorst-Sonsfeld, '...who found the stick between the other properties of Hermann Goring...' He also mentions a second letter, one by a Margarett Bischoff, through whose intermediary he had obtained the stool. There is also a copy of the original letter of provenance by Freifrau Wittenhorst-Sonsfeld, undated, in German. She writes (in German): 'I hereby confirm that the round seat stick with wicker work and the initials H.G. is Herman Goring's stick seat...' Finally, included are three photographs showing Goring on hunting expeditions with this seat clearly visible, as well as a VHS and CD showing Goring and Benito Mussolini on another hunt with this seat visible yet again. The Wittenhorst-Sonsfeld family was well known in Bavaria for centuries, tied to the royal family and the aristocracy. The family owned property near Hanover, along the German-Dutch border, and in Bavaria, as far as we are able to determine. A terrific relic reflecting Goring's greatest passion.
