Description:

HERMANN GORING PRESENTATION PAINTED PORTFOLIO
A large hand-tooled and hand-painted leather writing portfolio, believed to have been presented to and owned by Reichsminister HERMANN GORING (1893-1946). The 12 x 15.25 (closed) presentation displays a winged griffin with flag in right profile. At the bottom of the figure is a 4 x 4.25 in. hand painted rendering of Goring's coat of arms. The painting, very well executed in silver, red, white, blue, etc. etc. originally had brilliant colors. However, at some point in time, probably at the time of its execution, the finished work was layered in lacquer which in some places has yellowed and bubbled. Nevertheless, in many spots the original, bright colors show through, and the ageing of the lacquer attests to the age of the artwork. The edges of the leather cover bear more intricate filigree designs. Some high spots show wear, there is wear about the spine, and there appears to be a stain to the lower-right corner. The interior of the portfolio has fold over flaps to contain correspondence, and the right side provides a writing surface. These surfaces are soiled, worn, and have many tears. We are quite convinced this is a period piece, probably gifted to Goring, but due to the lack of provenance and condition, it is estimated accordingly and sold as is.
