Description:

HERMANN GORING PRESENTATION AWARD TO A KNIGHTS CROSS RECIPIENT
A fine presentation piece gifted by Reichsmarschall HERMANN GORING and a Luftwaffe squadron to Feldwebel Leopold Munster, a pilot who had been awarded a Knights Cross. The presentation resembles an ashtray, constructed of black marble with white and brown veins, 10 in. in diameter. A bronze eagle which is about to take flight sits top a block of the same type of marble at the rear of the piece. The surface of the rear of the award bears an engraved bronze plaque reading: 'To Sergeant Leopold Munster In recognition by our squadron of the award of the Knights Cross 2nd J. 3 UDET, awarded on 12 January 1942'. Beneath appears an engraving of Goring's signature in facsimile. The left side of the plaque bears an engraving of the squadron's emblem. Fine condition. Jagdgeschwader 3 (JG 3) 'Udet' was a Luftwaffe fighter wing which operated on all the German fronts of World War II. It was named after Ernst Udet, an important figure in the development of the Luftwaffe, in 1942. LEOPOLD MUNSTER (1920–1944) was a fighter pilot credited with 95 aerial victories achieved in over 500 combat missions. This figure includes 70 aerial victories on the Eastern Front, and a further 25 victories over the Western Allies, including eight four-engine bombers. Munster would soon be named squadron leader of the 5. Staffel of JG 3 and would perish in a mid-air collision with a B-24 Liberator bomber on 8 May 1944. Posthumously, he was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. A fine relic.
