Description:

HERMANN FEGELEIN
Rare signed book with a very lengthy, important inscription, "Das Neue Reiterbuch" ("The New Rider''s Book") by Dr. Anton Mayer (Stuttgart: Verlag Robert Lutz Nachfolder Otto Schramm), 1937. 296pp. 8vo., an illustrated history of equestrianism. On the half-title page and facing page, devoted equestrian Hermann Fegelein has inscribed the book to unknown party, probably author Mayer. He writes: "To the co-founder and friend of the school, in the battle for our existence, in heartfelt comradeship. Munich-Riem 21. March 1938 Fegelein SS Staff [?]". Opposite, he adds a lengthy quote from the Xenophon, the ancient Greek philosopher, historian, soldier, mercenary, and student of Socrates. In part: "The Horse is Man''s Best Friend. In its being it has something very gracious and appealing, and it attracts all eyes when under the skilled hand of the rider...Honor to him who knows how to master him...Xenophon". Fine condition We suspect that Mayer was the "co-founder" with Fegelein''s father of the Reitinstitute Fegelein, a riding academy founded in 1926 and which suffering from strong competition. It was likely at that academy that Fegelein further honed his skills which led to his command of the SS Totenkopf Reiterstandarte (Death''s-Head Horse Regiment).
