HERMANN BALCK
(1893 - 1982) German general engaged in the defense against the Soviet breakthrough at Stalingrad, and the attempt to relieve Stalingrad in late 1942, the defense against the Soviet breakthrough across the Dnieper, and the counterattack at Zhitomir in 1943. Holder of the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. S.P. 4" x 6" b/w, a chest, up portrait in uniform showing his award and signed (post-war) at bottom. On the verso he pens an A.L.S. in 1972 in English, calling a Bulgarian general a "brave soldier" but complaining that the Bulgarian's armaments: "...were not modern and not equal to the Russian...". Fine.
