Description:

HEREND VASE PRESENTED TO ADOLF HITLER BY MIKLOS HORTHY, CAPTURED AT THE BERGHOF
An excellent association Hitler relic with impeccable provenance, a white ceramic vase, approx. 5" x 6" dia., with a flared rim and four gilt feet resting on a square base. The vase is decorated outside and in with butterflies and sprays of flowers. The base bears the mark of Hungarian porcelain manufacturer Herend, along with a German national eagle and a coat of arms depicting an armored arm grasping a bunch of wheat, all in blue. The base also bears the blind-incised name "Herend" and the inventory number "6402". In fine condition. The vase presented here was part of a large dinner service presented to German dictator Adolf Hitler by Hungarian regent Admiral Miklos Horthy in October of 1937. Provenance is provided by a T.L.S. from the Herend Procelain Manufactory's Export Sales Director and Regional Exports Manager, 1p. 4to., Herend, May 29, 2000, to a former owner, confirming that it was manufactured by them and presented to Hitler by the State of Hungary, and offering to purchase it for their museum. Further provenance is provided by a notarized T.L.S. from one Frances McGovern, 1p. 4to., Medford, Oregon, Oct. 24, 2000, to auction house Butterfields of San Francisco, affirming that the vase was retrieved from Hitler's residence at Berchtesgaden by Donald K. McGovern, a DUKW driver assigned to the 3337 Quartermaster's Company of the 3rd Infantry Division, which was tasked with the capture of the Obersalzburg. The letter relates that McGovern carried the vase with him by looping his belt though the base, before sending it home to Oregon. The catalog for Butterfields December 200 sale, listing and depicting the vase, is also present, as well as an April 2008 listing from auction house Bonhams, offering the vase as one of a pair. The lot is rounded out by an ex-library copy of "Memoirs", by Miklos Horthy (New York: Robert Speller & Sons), 1957, 268pp. 8vo., as well as several period photographs of Hitler and Horthy alone and together, with a pack of souvenir photos of Obersalzburg.
