Description:

(1850-1916) 'First Earl Kitchener', Senior British Army officer who won fame for his imperial campaigns and played a central role during the First World War, though he died halfway through the war. Great content A.L.S. from a 'Dave Carter', Kitchener's aide, to his 'dear old Chum' Rosie, 19pp. 8vo., [n.p., likely England], Aug. 28, 1902, expressing his desire to see them before '…I leave for the wildernesses of So. Africa & India…'. This letter, written just after the Kitchener's success as Commander-in-Chief during the Second Boer War and before his transfer to India, shows the superstardom of Kitchener's forces after his successes in Africa. In part: '…[Kitchener] has since recommended me…for the grant of the ‘Medal for Distinguished Content in the Field'…I accompanied him to London…where he was received by the Prince & Princess of Wales…Some of the old Naval Officers recognized me…& shook hands with me, Col. Sandbuch, Gen. Wynne, Gen. Hildyard, Col. Cowan…I got a few stares that day…I got recognized 3 or 4 times…got quite a standing ovation, some shouting…'There's one of Lord Kitchener's Sergts; Three cheers for him'…drinks and cigars offered me in such quantities that I…quietly ‘vamoosed'…' Fine. These celebrations seem slightly immoral today, as Kitchener's success in Africa had been fueled through the imprisonment of Boer civilians in concentration camps. Fine condition.
