Description:

HERBERT C. HOOVER
(1874 - 1964) 34th President of the United States whose attempts to reverse the course of the Great Depression led to his defeat at the polls by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Very rare, good content draft A.L. (unsigned), 1p. 4to., [New York], July 2, 1959, in pencil to Lewis Strauss consoling his friend following his rejection as Secretary of Commerce. In part: "...You have no right to be chagrined nor to apologize to anybody. You have been the best, the most able and the most patriotic public servant in my recollection...Those people...failed in their lynching performance...They on the other hand have an incurable cancer in their moral character and in their future political life...". In the first dozen years of the atomic age, few men played a more pivotal role in shaping U.S. nuclear policy than the former banker Lewis Strauss (1896-1974). An ardent champion of the hydrogen bomb, he was also a strong believer in the importance of maintaining a large nuclear stockpile. He chaired the Atomic Energy Commission from 1953-58, and later used his influence to strip Robert Oppenheimer of his security clearance. Over the years Strauss' arrogance and his insistence that he was always right made him unpopular on Capitol Hill. In 1959, after two months of exhausting hearings, the Senate rejected his nomination to be Eisenhower's Secretary of Commerce. The ordeal was publicly humiliating for Strauss, especially after he was caught lying under oath. Light staining to corners, staple holes at top left and very slight marginal chipping, very good.
