Description:

887. BARBARA HEPWORTH (1903 - 1975) Major British sculptor and artist of the twentieth century who pioneered a new, abstract style in the 1930s. She was a contemporary and friend of Henry Moore, and is best remembered for her Dag Hammarskjold memorial at the United Nations. An uncommon archive consisting of nine A.L.S.'s; ten T.L.S.'s; three telegrams; an aerial photograph signed on the verso as well as a secretarial letter and a T.L.S. from U.N. Under-Secretary RALPH BUNCHE, all addressed to film maker Warren Forma who featured Hepworth in his "Five British Sculptors" documentary series. The letters are written from the mid-1960s-early 1970s, with several pertaining to the unveiling of her most famous work at the U.N. A portion of the correspondence is personal in nature, but Hepworth also speaks about her Dag Hammerskjold sculpture and her work in general. In small part: "[May 7, 1964]...I think the unveiling ceremony will be in the afternoon with a reception afterwards...My new show opens in London...[July 6, 1964]...Could you possibly send me some more leaflets of the film...'British Sculptors Word & Talk'...It is wonderful of you to say that you will have my section of the film made for me...[Aug. 5, 1966]...Please, please, could you tell me which slate sculpture of marble you chose? I am feeling desperate as we had a very bad week last week with several breakages and very nearly several people killed and I have had a total lapse of memory...[Sept. 30, 1966]...I'm so happy you like the sculpture...". Much more. According to a promotional brochure: "Warren Forma...traveled to England with a tape recorder and cameras to capture the ideas and thinking of the artists in their own atmospheres...". He made several documentaries of important artists of his time, including Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick, and Hans Hoffman. Together all the original transmittal envelopes; a New York Times article on Heyworth and several other pieces of printed material. All very good or better. Auction records indicate that no Hepworth has come on the market! $400 - 500
