HENRY W. MORRIS
(1806 - 1863) Civil War naval officer, commodore of the steam sloop Pensacola. While passing Forts Jackson and Fort St. Philip, on the Mississippi River, Morris became involved in a cannon exchange with the Confederate batteries who ultimately scored numerous hits on the Pensacola killing four men, and wounding thirty three others. Died of sickness in 1863. Rare, fine content A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Aug 26, 1861, to Sec. of the Navy Gideon Welles, in part: '...I have the honor to enclose, herewith, the application of Mr. John C. Bunner, to be appointed an Acting Lieutenant or, and Acting Master. in the Navy to serve during the War. I have known Mr. Bunner very intimately during my early life. I was in the 'Ontario' where we served together as Midshipmen in the Mediterranean...1822 to 1824. His conduct was excellent... He afterward served on the frigates 'Constitution' & 'Brandywine". under the late Commodore Jacob Jones...'. More. Central fold tear, mounting traces to left margin, overall very good.
