Description:

(1859- 1930) U.S. Major General known for exploring the Copper River in Alaska in 1885 along with the Tanana and Koyukuk rivers by traversing 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of wilderness. His trek has been compared by Nelson A. Miles to that of Lewis and Clark. Later commanded the 90th Infantry Division through World War I. Good association signed book: 'The Rhineland Journal of General Henry T. Allen' (Cambridge: Riverside Press), 1923. 591pp. 8vo. The front flyleaf is signed by Allen beneath a dedication to American author JULIAN STREET (1879 - 1947), adding 'in warm remembrance of Oglethorpe days...' An A.L.S. by Allen and addressed to Street is affixed within, 3pp. 8vo., Washington, Feb. 10, 1924, in part: '...Marshall [likely GEORGE MARSHALL] and Parker [FRANK PARKER] commanded troops abroad in battle, but Howze did not. He arrived too late to participate...Parker for a short time commanded the First Division in action...' Trimmed at right edge, removing some letters of the signature, else very good. The original transmittal envelope is tipped to the adjoining page.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
