HENRY ST JOHN, 1ST VISCOUNT BOLINGBROKE
(1678 - 1751) English politician, a leader of the Tories who supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 which sought to overthrow the new king George I. Escaping to France he became foreign minister for the Pretender. He was accused of treason, but was allowed to return to England in 1723. Good content L.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Whitehall, June 25, 1714. Bolingbroke orders the payment of 200 pounds in reimbursements to "Mr. Pulteney", recalling that the former's secretary had traveled to Copenhagen to negotiate the release of several British ships seized by the Danes. Mounted, with three words partially lost due to a large loss at lower-left corner, else very good.
