Description:

(1811 – 1892) Union brigadier general captured at Cedar Mountain, later active in the Rapidan and Mine Run Operations. War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.], March 15, 1864. In part: ‘...I wish to write a line to you of the best men...and generals...for fear that the brief time I have left of my furlough should not admit of my seeing you...The officer is Gen. Humphreys...It is said that he was lukewarm at the beginning of the war...He worked eagerly on his report and while doing so trained himself for the field. As soon as he was able he applied for duty...At the time his physician and friends did not believe he would be able to stand it in the field. Surely it is not necessary to say that his service the two years he has been in the field is not lukewarm...Mr. Noah...seems to be one who speaks against Humphreys...' Signed at the conclusion. Inlaid into 4to. stock. Very good.
