HENRY L. BENNING
(1814-1875) Confederate brigadier general in charge of 'Benning's Brigade' that served with distinction at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, and the Battle of the Wilderness, ardent Georgia supporter of secession and the preservation of slavery. A.L.S., 2pp. 4to. Cuthbert, GA, Oct. 15, 1845, to his wife, Mary. In part: ‘Thank you for your letter by last night's mail but am extremely sorry your father is no better. Tell him the bridge case is continued & that I think he need not incur the fatigue of coming here at this town. If however I should not be able to return by 3 oclock [sic] Sunday evening next he or Joshua must go to Talbot Court. We have two cases there particularly that must be attended to. They are both against Peter F Mahone… I have not much time & so must close with my best love…' He signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds and some scattered foxing, in very good to fine condition overall.
