Description:

HENRY KNOX
(1750 - 1806) American Revolution major general and advisor to Washington, Knox served throughout the war and was responsible for building the Continental Army's artillery stock. Good association manuscript L.S. as Secretary of War, 1p. 4to., 'War Department', September 17, 1793, to former quartermaster Samuel Hodgdon (1745-1824) regarding tents for a party. In full: 'I believe it will be indispensable under present circumstances that in the absence of the Secretary of the Treasury you have the necessary tents prepared for the party at Hagerstown and sent off with all possible dispatch.' Slightly toned, with scattered stains. Samuel Hodgdon was a longtime friend of Knox and served under him in the Continental Army during the war. When Knox was made Secretary of War, he had Hodgdon promoted to Quartermaster General of the Army. He served in this capacity until being removed after the disastrous 'St. Clair's defeat. ' On November 4, 1791, the American army led by Arthur St. Clair suffered its most decisive defeat in history at the Battle of the Wabash against a western confederation of Native Americans. When the general returned to Philadelphia in disgrace he was immediately dismissed, but the House of Representatives opened their own inquiry into the executive branch, the first of its kind in history. St. Clair blamed Knox, the War Department, and specifically Hodgdon for the unpreparedness of his forces which in turn led to the defeat. The congressional committee ruled in St. Clair's favor, although no final report was ever published. Hodgdon was relieved of his position during the inquiry, yet served in quartermaster roles afterwards, and was a frequent correspondent of Knox.
