HENRY J. HUNT
(1819-1889) Union brigadier general who broke the Confederate pursuit at Bull Run, and whose 147 gun battery opened the battle at Fredericksburg. He is best remembered for commanding the artillery that mowed down the men in Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg. Good content war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., ‘Before Petersburg', July 16, 1864, to Brig. Gen. JOHN TITCOMB SPRAGUE. Hunt writes to request that a Capt. Charles Kusserow be allowed to remain in service as his unit, the 32nd New York Independent Battery, is about to be mustered out. Hunt details Kusserow's service prior to serving under his command and continues, in part ‘...Captain Kusserow whilst under my command did full justice to Major Arndt's recommendation and judgment. He served with me in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, and I take pleasure in recommending him to you as a thorough soldier, by education he was an officer of Prussian Artillery on his arrival in this country which sufficiently guarantees his qualifications.' Hunt signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig. Genl. Chief of Ar.' Shows original mailing folds with slight splits thereto, slight toning to the edges and two small pinholes at upper left, otherwise very good to fine.
