Description:

HENRY J. HUNT
(1819 - 1889) Union brigadier general who broke the Confederate pursuit at Bull Run, as Chief of Artillery at Fredericksburg his 147 gun battery opened the battle. He is best remembered for commanding the artillery at Gettysburg, helping to repulse Pickett's charge. War-date A.L.S. "Henry J. Hunt, Brig. Gen. Chief of Ary", 2pp. 8vo., on Army of the Potomac letterhead, Feb. 3, 1863. to Union Gen. John W. Sprague. In part: "...Allow me to present to you Captain Razdevichin, of the House Artillery of the Guard of the Emperor of russia. Capt. R. has been with us some six weeks and desires to enter our service in the present war. I do not doubt that his services will be valuable if he receives a commission and I would recommend him for an appointment should there be one at your disposal. Capt. R. speaks German and French, and is rapidly acquiring the English. The kind reception given to our officers by the Russian service in the Crimea, when Capt. R. served at the period of Genl. McClellan's visit, entitles officers of that army to special consideration. Capt. R. brought letters to Genl. Burnside from Genl. McClellan recommending him to our kind officer...". The U.S. had entered into a friendship with Russia prior to the onset of war, and in 1856 McClellan had been sent as part of a military commission to study European war tactics, logistics and weaponry. In exchange, "Capt. R." was brought to the U.S. as an observer of the Civil War and was welcomed into the Union Army. Folds, very good.
