HENRY HUGHES HOUGH
(1871–1943) Rear Admiral in the Navy and one-time military Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1923 he was the director of the Office of Naval Intelligence. He also commanded the Yangtze Patrol from 1925 to 1927. Fine association I.S.P., 7.5 x 10.5 b/w (sight), a seated pose in uniform inscribed in the white lower margin: 'To Lieut. Cmdr. L. J. Wiltse, U.S. Navy. Aide and Flag Lieutenant 'In affectionate appreciation', Henry H. Hough Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy Commander Yangtze Patrol, 1925-27'. Photo by Underwood & Underwood. Framed, fine condition. Lloyd J. Wiltse (1891-1984) would later achieve the rank of rear admiral. As captain of the cruiser DETROIT at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, he saved his ship by getting her underway safely to set up antiaircraft fire which accounted for several enemy planes. He also received the Navy Cross for going into heavily-defended enemy waters two rescue two crippled cruiser and tow them to safety. WITH: a 14 x 10 in. b/w photograph of the USS ISABEL, Hough's flagship during the Yangtze Patrol, 1925-1927, annotated by Hough at bottom. The ISABEL was purchased by the Navy from auto magnate John N. Willys in 1917 and during the Yangtze Patrol, she was flagship of the patrol's commander, Rear Admiral William H. G. Bullard. On many occasions the ship came under fire, as in October 1926 when she was caught between the rifle fire of opposing Chinese armies on the Yangtze. ISABEL also took part in the Nanking Incident on 24 March 1927, when shelling and threats of force procured the release of a large group of American and British prisoners held by Chinese nationalists in Nanking. Also included is a 13 x 10.5 in. b/w framed photograph of a heavy cruiser, unidentified, possibly at Hawaii. Three pieces.
