HENRY GARDNER (1730 - 1782) American Revolution politician who helped organize a provincial congress of New England states in 1774 seeking common defense and welfare of the region. Partly-printed D.S. "H. Gardner" as Treasurer, 1p. 4to., [Boston]. Dec. 1, 1777, a Massachusetts treasury certificate, acknowledging receipt for 82 pounds, 15 shillings from Joseph Searl, "for the Use and Service of the State of Massachusetts-Bay, and in Behalf of said State, I do hereby promise and oblige myself and Successors in the Office of Treasurer, to repay to the said Joseph Searl or Bearer, by the first Day of March, A.D. 1781...with Interest Annually at Six per Cent per Annum...". Countersigned by three members of the committee including "S. Scollay", "Eze. Price" and "P. Boyer", and bears very ornate engravings including a vignette of a soldier at top with sword in hand being part of the early Massachusetts Seal. Light toning and soiling, slightly weak at folds with a few minor pinholes at intersections, else very good condition.
