Description:

HENRY FORD
(1863 - 1947) American automobile manufacturer and founder of the Ford Motor Company, his use of the assembly line revolutionized the industry. Scarce signed book, The Art of Living Long by Luigi Cornaro (English translation), later printing Milwaukee: William F. Butler, 1918. This leatherbound volume is 214pp., 6" x 9", signed and inscribed on the first free endpaper: "To Albert D. Lasker from your friend Henry Ford Feb. 11, 1928". Lasker (1880-1952) was a leading figure in the history of American advertising, and was credited with the invention of the soap opera, which was originally developed as an advertising medium. He oversaw Warren G. Harding's successful Presidential campaign, and owned the Chicago Cubs before selling the franchise to William Wrigley, Jr. in 1925. Most interestingly and ironically, Lasker was a prominent figure in the American Jewish community, and a member of the American Jewish Committee which loudly denounced the "Protocols of Zion" and other falst anti-Semitic literature. Of course Ford published his controversial volume The International Jew in 1920, essentially a re-hash of stereotypical anti-Jewish Protocols of Zion, despite his repudiation later. Nonetheless, Ford managed to maintain friends in the Jewish community, such as Lasker. In very good condition, with light rubbing to extremeties, early marginal cloth tape reinforcements to front and rear blanks, front hinge slightly cracked, and light scattered toning. Overall very good condition, and rare with this fine and ironic association.
