Description:

HENRY DUNDAS
(1742 - 1811) Lord Melville, Scottish advocate and independent Whig politician. He was the trusted lieutenant of British prime minister William Pitt, and the most powerful politician in Scotland in the latter decades of the 18th century. Manuscript L.S. as Home Secretary, 1p. legal folio, Whitehall, Jan. 4, 1792, to 'General [Edward] Mathew' in Grenada. Dundas sends 'a printed Copy of a Code of Regulations, which has been signed by His Majesty, relative to the carrying on Fortifications or other Military Services...pay strict observance to the several Regulations...as required by my circular Letter...' Mathew pens an A.L.S. 'E.M.' on the verso, Mar. 12, 1792, receipting Dundas' letter and agreeing to comply. Very good. EDWARD MATHEW (1728-1805) commanded a brigade of guards in America, 1775, was commander-in-chief West Indies and governor of Grenada 1784-1789. His will refers to his estates and slaves on Dominica, which he left to his son Brownlow.
