HENRY DEARBORN
(1751 - 1829) American military officer and Secretary of War, fought at Bunker Hill, in Arnold's Quebec expedition, ay at Wyoming Valley, and in the War of 1812 took Fort George and York with heavy losses. Good content A.L.S. as Secretary of War, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Oct. 5, 1805, to his son Henry Alexander Dearborn, in part: "...Your letter...received with pleaure. I am in doubt what interest to take in relation to my horses, but at all events they ought to be sold...Your Mother has for some time past had a great deal of trouble with her knee, which she hurt by striking it against the step of the Gigg...I find that Miss C. makes very light of any contemplated connection with you, she says that her friends would never have consented to her conversation with you. I hope you will care as little about her as she appears to care about you...Mr. & Mrs. Mason and family are at our house,- the President [Jefferson], Mr. [Albert] Galtalin [sic] & Mr. [Robert] Stritsetts have arrived. Mr.[James] Madison is expected to morrow...Mr. Hamilton & Mr. Beckleys families have been very sickly and continue so. I never enjoyed better health in any summer & autumn of my life, than I have this year.... Very good condition.
