Description:

HENRY DANVERS: 'MURDER WILL OUT'
HENRY DANVERS, 1ST EARL OF DANBY (1573-1643) English soldier. Outlawed after a killing, he regained favour and became a Knight of the Garter. Following a distinguished military career, by Charles I he was created Earl of Danby on 20 July 1628 he was sworn a member of the privy council. He was installed a knight of the Garter in 1633. In 1689, Danvers published his expose: 'Murder Will Out: Or, A Clear and Full Discovery That the Earl of Essex Did Not Feloniously Murder Himself But Was Barbarously Murthered by Others...'. The Earl of Essex, ARTHUR CAPELL (1631-1683) was the son of Arthur Capell, 1st Baron Capell of Hadham (executed in 1649). He died in the Tower of London on 13 July 1683, having been convicted of participation in the Rye House Plot against the King and his brother, and was said to have been discovered in his chamber with his throat cut while awaiting execution for treason. His death was attributed, quite groundlessly, to Charles and James, and the evidence points clearly if not conclusively to suicide, but those who questioned that conclusion (and there were many) were summarily arrested and jailed. Offered here is an undated, period 12pp. 8vo. manuscript entitled: 'Murder Will Out...', the same full title as Danver's publication) and in an old English hand. The text, apparently essentially the same as published by Danvers, is written on laid paper with a fleur de lis watermark, under the pseudonym: 'By Philanthropos'. The actual writer of the text is unknown, but we wonder if it could have been Danvers himself. The fact that Danvers wrote the text in 1684 and published it under his own name five years later almost certainly dates this piece to that five-year period. The pages are tipped at one margin in a smaller sheet allowing them to be bound in a ca. early 1800s re-purposed marbled binding. The ownership signature 'John A. Fairley' appears on the front flyleaf. Certainly worthy of careful research.
