HENRY CLINTON
(1738 - 1795) English major general who succeeded Howe as commander in chief in North America, captured Charleston in 1780 and resigned his post following a quarrel with Cornwallis. Most unusual partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, New York, July 31, 1781. As the end of the Revolution approaches and under the name of King George III, Clinton issues a pardon: "...out of the Zeal and Affection which we have and bear to our Subjects, have pardoned, remissed and released...Archibald Nelson of the Province of New York, or by whatsoever Name or Sir-Name...the said Archjibald Nelson shall be reputed...all and singular TREASONS, as well as HIGH TREASONS as PETIT TREASONS, REBELLIONS,INSURRECTIONS and CONSPIRACIES...[also] all and singular Judgments, Pains of Death, Punishments...". Signed by Clinton at bottom, and by a secretary as well. Paper seal at left. Heavy folds, bottom margin well worn, still very good.
